Boundaries Need a Workable System

A boundary is easier to maintain when the surrounding workflow supports it. Telling staff to stop answering messages after hours has little value if urgent requests still arrive without coverage or response expectations. Clarify the system behind the request.

An employee can state when they are available and ask how genuinely urgent concerns should be routed. A manager can identify backup coverage and model the same expectations. These conversations should account for role requirements rather than assume every position has identical flexibility.

Research connection

This evidence-informed framework emphasizes working conditions and worker voice. The following exercise is a practical application, not a tested intervention. [1]

Put it into practice

Choose one recurring after-hours demand. Document who sends it, its actual deadline, and the coverage available. Agree on a practical response rule and review it after two weeks.
