Create a Transition Between Work and Home

Leaving the building does not always mean feeling finished with the day. A transition can provide a practical marker between professional responsibilities and personal time. Keep it simple enough to use during an ordinary busy week.

Close necessary tasks, identify what must be handed over, and leave a secure reminder for the next workday. Then choose a neutral activity such as changing clothes or taking a short walk. If distress remains intense, a routine alone may be insufficient; consultation and clinical support remain options.

Research connection

Bride documented secondary traumatic stress symptoms among social workers. The survey does not show that every exposed professional develops a disorder. [1]

Put it into practice

Design a five-minute transition that does not involve client information. Try it on two workdays. Notice what helps and whether unresolved concerns need a professional follow-up rather than more private rumination.
