Accountability With Dignity

A respectful workplace still needs clear standards. When performance falls short, discuss the behavior, its impact, and the expected correction. Public embarrassment can distract from the actual problem and make future questions harder to raise.

In a private meeting, describe a missed deadline accurately and ask about barriers before deciding on next steps. Clarify required changes and available support. Fair accountability includes consistent procedures and an opportunity to understand expectations; it does not require excusing harmful behavior.

Research connection

Edmondson found an association between team psychological safety and learning behavior. The study does not establish causation across all settings. [1]

Put it into practice

Prepare a feedback statement with the observable behavior, its effect on the work, and the next required action. Invite questions and confirm understanding before ending the conversation.
