Return to Priorities When Everything Feels Urgent

When every request is labeled urgent, workers may have no reliable way to make tradeoffs. Ask for priorities to be ranked in relation to deadlines, impact, and available capacity. Clarity helps turn a vague demand into a decision that can be reviewed.

If two assignments cannot both be completed safely in the available time, describe the conflict early. A manager can choose a sequence, modify scope, or obtain help. Employees should not have to infer which important duty leadership is willing to delay.

Research connection

This evidence-informed framework emphasizes working conditions and worker voice. The following exercise is a practical application, not a tested intervention. [1]

Put it into practice

Bring a short list of competing tasks to your next check-in. Ask which comes first and what should be postponed if new work arrives. Record the agreed priorities and revisit them when conditions change.
